Sometimes a tattoo represents a moment in your life that no longer feels like you.
Whether you want to remove it, significantly fade it, or lighten it for a cover-up, laser tattoo removal works by gradually breaking down the tattoo pigment.
The laser delivers very short pulses of light energy into the tattoo. The pigment absorbs the energy, creating a photoacoustic effect that breaks the ink into smaller particles.
Your body then gradually clears these fragments over the following weeks.
The laser breaks down the ink — your body does the clearing.
Tattoo removal is a gradual process. Your skin needs time to heal and your body needs time to process the fragmented pigment between sessions.
The number of treatments varies depending on the:
Dark inks generally respond well, while some colours can be more difficult to treat.
Complete removal cannot always be guaranteed. In some cases, the goal may be significant fading before a cover-up.
Treatment can feel like quick, hot snaps against the skin. Temporary redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness or blistering can occur afterwards.
A consultation and patch test allow me to assess your tattoo, skin and medical history and determine whether treatment is appropriate.
Most importantly, patience is part of tattoo removal. The laser starts the process, but your body needs time to clear the pigment.

Laser tattoo removal uses very short pulses of light energy to target pigment within the tattoo.
The tattoo ink absorbs the laser energy, producing a rapid photoacoustic effect that fragments larger pigment particles into smaller pieces.
Your immune system then gradually processes and clears some of these fragmented particles over the weeks following treatment.
This is why tattoo removal is a gradual process rather than something that happens immediately after the laser passes over the tattoo.
There is no reliable one-size-fits-all number.
Some tattoos respond relatively quickly, while others require a longer treatment course.
Factors affecting the number of sessions include:
Ink colour
Amount and density of ink
Depth of pigment
Tattoo size
Professional or amateur application
Age of the tattoo

Complete removal cannot be guaranteed.
Some tattoos can achieve excellent clearance, while others may retain some residual pigment despite multiple treatments.
The aim may also be different for each client. You might want maximum possible removal, significant fading or simply enough fading to make a future cover-up easier.
Black ink generally responds particularly well because it absorbs laser energy efficiently.
Other colours can be more challenging and require wavelengths appropriate to their pigment.
The actual composition of tattoo ink isn't always known, so two tattoos that appear to be the same colour can sometimes respond differently.

Different colours absorb different wavelengths of light, and some pigments are considerably more resistant than others.
Certain colours and pigment formulations may respond poorly or unpredictably.
Permanent makeup requires additional caution.
Some cosmetic pigments contain compounds that can undergo a colour change when exposed to laser energy. Certain lighter, flesh-toned, white, pink, red or iron-containing pigments may darken rather than lighten following laser exposure.
This is known as paradoxical darkening.
Permanent makeup should therefore never be approached exactly like a conventional black body tattoo.
You may notice an immediate temporary white or “frosted” appearance over the tattoo during treatment.
This is a short-lived reaction caused by rapid interaction between the laser energy, tattoo pigment and surrounding tissue.
It doesn't mean the tattoo has instantly disappeared.
The frosting usually settles relatively quickly, while the actual fading of tattoo pigment happens gradually over the following weeks.
Tattoo removal can be uncomfortable.
Most clients describe it as a series of quick, hot snapping sensations against the skin.
How it feels depends on factors including the location and size of your tattoo and your individual sensitivity.
Smaller tattoos can often be treated relatively quickly.
Trying to remove all of the tattoo pigment in a single treatment would not be a safe or realistic approach.

More frequent treatment doesn't necessarily mean faster removal.
Immediately after treatment, the area may appear white or frosted before becoming red, warm or slightly swollen.
Depending on the individual treatment response, you may experience:
Redness
Swelling
Warmth
Tenderness
Temporary frosting
Itching during healing
Blistering
Crusting or scabbing
These reactions vary between clients and treatments.
You'll receive detailed aftercare instructions explaining how to care for your skin during the healing process.
Blistering can occur following laser tattoo removal, although not everybody experiences it.
If a blister develops, don't deliberately burst, pick or peel it.
Keeping the area appropriately protected and following your aftercare instructions helps support normal healing.
Any procedure that intentionally delivers energy into the skin carries some risk.
Potential complications can include scarring and changes in pigmentation, although careful client selection, appropriate treatment parameters and correct aftercare help minimise risk.
Picking scabs, deliberately bursting blisters, exposing healing skin to excessive sunlight or failing to follow aftercare can increase the risk of complications.
Existing tattoo-related scarring can also become more noticeable as the ink fades.
All relevant risks will be discussed during your consultation before treatment begins.
Yes. Temporary or, less commonly, persistent changes in skin pigmentation are possible.
These include:
Hypopigmentation – the treated skin becomes lighter.
Hyperpigmentation – the treated skin becomes darker.
Risk can be influenced by skin type, treatment parameters, sun exposure and individual healing response.
This is another reason why protecting the treatment area from sun exposure is so important.
Treatment should not be performed over recently tanned skin.
A tan increases melanin within the skin. Because laser energy can also interact with melanin, treating recently tanned skin may increase the risk of burns and unwanted pigmentation changes.
Please tell me about recent holidays, sun exposure or sunbed use before your appointment.
Your treatment can be postponed if necessary.
Protecting your skin is more important than keeping an appointment.
Fake tan should be completely removed from the treatment area before your appointment.
You'll receive preparation instructions explaining what to avoid before treatment.
Avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure

Don't intentionally irritate or damage the skin

Hot baths, saunas and steam rooms
Strenuous exercise
Swimming
Friction against the treated area
Picking or scratching
Harsh or irritating skincare products
Excessive sun exposure

Picking scabs or deliberately bursting blisters can interfere with healing and increase the risk of infection, pigmentation changes and scarring.

Not everyone wants their tattoo completely removed.
Sometimes the aim is simply to reduce the density of the existing tattoo enough to give your tattoo artist greater freedom when designing a cover-up.
Depending on the tattoo, this may require fewer sessions than attempting maximum clearance.

If possible, tell me what type of laser was previously used, approximately how many sessions you've had, when your most recent treatment was and whether you experienced any complications.
Previous treatment doesn't automatically prevent further removal, but it can influence the treatment plan.
